IGOR JOSIFOV

Igor Josifov (b. 1986) is a visual and performance artist whose practice explores the body, vulnerability, memory, and transformation through performance, fire, glass, ceramics, installation, and sculpture.

For more than two decades, Josifov has investigated the body as both physical presence and a site of transformation. Fire has remained a recurring material and conceptual force throughout his practice, evolving from direct encounters with the performing body toward glass, burned surfaces, ceramics, porcelain, and materials transformed through heat. This ongoing experimentation led to his development of the Fire Reflection technique, in which fire becomes both medium and collaborator, creating images and traces through controlled combustion and reflection. Across these forms, his work examines states of presence and absence, fragility and endurance, destruction and renewal.

His work has been presented internationally at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; Onassis Cultural Centre, Athens; Museum of Contemporary Art, Skopje; Maraya Art Centre, Sharjah; Cité de la Mode et du Design, Paris; and the European Cultural Centre at Palazzo Mora, Venice.

In 2025, during his residency at Cité internationale des arts in Paris, Josifov developed Body of Fire, bringing together two decades of work shaped by fire, memory, and transformation. The project was subsequently presented as a solo exhibition at the Macedonian Embassy in Paris and, in 2026, at the 47th Skopsko Leto in Skopje.

Josifov is currently an artist-in-residence at Taoxichuan Art Center in Jingdezhen, China, where his practice is expanding through glass, ceramics, and porcelain. His current project, Body of Fire: Material Transmutation, extends his long-standing investigation of fire into the transformation of matter, bringing these materials into dialogue with heat, fracture, memory, and renewal.
